Golf at
LaCantera
Golf legend and award-winning
course designer, Arnold Palmer, has created a championship course for The
Westin La Cantera Resort to rival his other courses named as America’s
Best Courses by Golfweek. The 6,926-yard, par-71 magnificently scenic course
is set in the Texas Hill Country and will challenge your skills from tee
to green. The public course is Palmer’s first in South Texas and his fifth
course in the state. The Palmer Course is adjacent to the existing Resort
Course at La Cantera, and together, the public courses provide 36 exciting
holes of championship golf to guests of The Westin La Cantera Resort.
The Resort Course at La Cantera,
home of the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open and The Palmer Course at La Cantera
offer the best of both worlds to the business and leisure traveler. The
Golf Academy at La Cantera, headed by Mike Lamanna, offers a wide variety
of programs to ensure player improvement at every skill level and, upon
request, can develop customized programs.
With their unique landscaping of
artistically carved rock and colorful foliage, The Westin La Cantera Resort,
Resort Course at La Cantera and The Palmer Course at La Cantera evoke places
so natural and real that it feels as if they’ve been here forever.
| La Cantera has been the site
of the PGA Tour's Texas Open since 1995. Located on the north side
of town, this thrill-a-minute design by Tom Weiskopf and Jay
Morrish has made quite a bit of noise since its debut three years ago.
It was a Golf Magazine "Top 10 You Can Play" pick for 1995.
The 7,001-yard layout is spread
over three hilltops, serving up views of the surrounding terrain. Some
holes seem like a game of "can-you-top-this," with dramatic elevation changes,
carries over ravines, and risk-reward opportunities. But La Cantera pulls
this off without being gimmicky because it's the roller-coaster property,
not the design, that causes the drama.
Speaking of roller coasters, the
seventh hole provides one of the most remarkable scenes in all of golf.
The tee shot on this 316-yard par four drops 80 feet down to the fairway,
set in the bottom of an old limestone quarry. However, your eyes seem glued
to what sits to the left of the hole: The Fiesta Texas Amusement Park,
complete with "The Rattler," a huge wooden roller coaster directly on the
other side of a fence from the green. Every 40 seconds or so, your concentration
is interrupted by the shrieks of yet another group of thrill seekers as
they cascade down the coaster's initial drop.

| The Palmer Course at La Cantera
opened in March 2001 and offers visitors to The Westin La Cantera Resort
a second 18-hole course, designed by Arnold Palmer and the Palmer Course
Design Co. The course complements the existing Resort Course at La Cantera,
and together the public daily fee courses are the first in South Texas
to provide 36 holes of championship golf designed by golfing legends.
Located on 225 acres, The Palmer
Course at La Cantera provides golf enthusiasts a par-71 course measuring
approximately 7,000 yards. The course includes several signature holes,
including the par 3 No. 4 hole with dramatic waterfalls along the entire
front of the green and a tribute to Palmer’s late wife: The Winnie Palmer
Memorial Bridge.
Also featured on all of the course’s
carts is the state-of-the-art ParView GPS system, which is key in assisting
golfers as they map out their strategy for each hole.
Arnold Palmer played a six-hole exhibition
on the course during the grand opening, and stated that, “The Palmer Course
at La Cantera is one-of-a-kind and a first-class golfing experience.”
The Palmer Course was named as one
of America’s 100 Best Golf Shops by Golf World Business magazine in 2003
– one of just four awarded in Texas.
